Grantwriting: Searching for Grants

The foundation of successful grant writing is research. In this section you will learn:

» Where to go to begin your search

Beginning the Search

Taking advantage of these free resources is the most efficient way to kick off your research.

1. Make a trip to the Main branch of the Cincinnati Public Library (8th street and Vine). There, you will find an entire department donated to fundraising, The Grants Resource Center, complete with a subscription to the Foundation Center's online database.

2. Visit www.guidestar.org, a great resource for discovering who your targeted foundation has funded in the past and at what level. The IRS Form 990 will tell you this information and who sits on their Board of Trustees. Membership at Guidestar is completely free.

3. Very few foundations have websites; however, it's worth checking. Foundation websites will tell you exactly what the donor wants you to know about their foundation and their funding profile.
