When contacting the media...

  1. Know the players. Otherwise, you're wasting your time, and theirs.
  2. Be honest.
  3. Be accessible.
  4. Be concise. KISS - Keep it simple, stupid.
  5. Be persistent. If at first you don't succeed, and you likely won't…
  6. Be fair. Exclusives as rewards may be okay, as long as it's above board.
  7. Be timely. Make sure they have enough time to cover things adequately. » Be thankful. Even if it doesn't result in coverage, they've given you their valuable time.

Local Media Contact List

At the root of all public relations efforts is a personal relationship. Below is a basic media contact list for Cincinnati-based outlets. You will notice that no names are listed, since media representatives can, and do, change often. Prior to even considering tackling PR, you should be familiar with the local press, and personally introduce yourself to various representatives whom you think are most appropriate for your organization.

During this initial one-on-one conversation (either by phone or in-person), you should ask them how and when they prefer to receive your information. This information will vary from organization to organization. It's up to you to create and maintain your personal database of media reps who could benefit your organization. Don't forget to include the calendar listing editors on your mailing list!
